AMA
Computer University is the first and largest
ICT University in Asia with an annual student
population of 150,000 and more than 200 campuses
in the Philippines and other parts of the world.
As the pioneer of computer
education in the Philippines, it was the first
to offer courses in Computer Science and Computer
Engineering, the first to offer e-Learning,
the first to provide one-to-one student-to-computer
ratio, the first computer university to offer
Mechatronics, the first school in the Philippines
to have received ISO 9001 Certification, the
first Premier Education Partner of Microsoft,
the first and exclusive training partner of
Avaya, and the first to branch out to key cities
and municipalities in the Philippines.
To date, only AMA has developed
on-line learning in the Philippines. It is also
the first school in the country that is developing
a University town comparable to Harvard, MIT
and others in the world.
Since its establishment in
1980, AMA has graduated more than 160,000 students
who are now gainfully employed in top IT companies
all over the world, a development that made
a name for the Philippines as the leading provider
of competent computer manpower in Asia.
Realizing the Vision
But the glory that is AMA did not come
overnight. It was achieved through hard work,
accurate execution and determination of AMA's
leadership. Named after Amable M. Aguiluz, Sr.,
AMA was established in 1980 as a small computer
institute. Its founder, Dr. Amable R. Aguiluz
V, had the firm resolve to educate the computer
market based on his experience in computer sales.
He was into computer distribution sometime in
1978 as sole distributor of Computer Land's
microcomputers in the Philippines. Looking at
computers as the wave of the future, he recognized
the very urgent need to educate his fellow Filipinos
and make them globally competitive. AMA proves
him right.
Setting up a non-traditional
school was not easy. Only 13 students enrolled
at the AMA Institute of Computer Studies during
the first semester and Dr. Aguiluz had second
thoughts about the viability of the project.
But he did not easily give up. Instead, he solved
the problem of low student population by embarking
on an aggressive marketing and information campaign.
He mustered all the resources that he can get
to make it succeed. With patience, determination
and hard work, AMA started attracting more students.
The following year, a favorable
public response encouraged Dr. Aguiluz V to
offer a four-year degree course in Computer
Science and establish the AMA Comptuer College
in Makati. It drew a lot of interest from students,
educators and professional alike who saw the
need for information technology. By 1983, the
institution grew into a network of colleges
in Metro Manila. And then it went nationwide.
And today international.
Capping the success of AMA
as an educational institution is the conferment
of University Status by the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED).
